With daring cantilevers, sweeping curves and cascading planting, the design of this duplex feels bold but surprisingly soft simultaneously.

Brick screens and deep overhangs provide sun shading and privacy whilst a double height void located in the middle of the dwelling create drama and maximise daylight and ventilation.

Bagged and textured brickwork further add tactility and create a play of light and shadow on the façade.

The pair of dwellings hug the steep south facing hillside. Each level is designing to maximise the views of Sydney Harbour and the heads. We introduced a large double height space on the northern side of the building, above the kitchen, to bring light deep into dwellings and it also allows for the living spaces to open onto a sheltered courtyard with a beautiful natural rock wall – for when the southerly picks up on a summer afternoon.

The narrow width of this typology demands efficiency and Platform certainly delivered efficient, beautiful and functional spaces. Our clients also initiated a desire for these dwellings to be passive homes and the end result is a pair of fully sealed, low energy use, sustainable dwellings.

Inspired by its context, this duplex takes a fresh approach on a corner site. The locality is a well established zone with a characteristic triangular gable from early 20th century, a typology that is reflected in the design with the combination of contemporary detailing. The layout and orientation on site strikes the fine line between opening up and privacy, embracing unexpected views on the first floor and providing apt outdoor living areas.

The design detailing was fine tuned in collaboration with the principal contractor, Sydcon Projects. This includes well-detailed vegetated green roofs over the ground floor living area of both homes, which – apart from softening the form – help to reduce thermal loads and minimizing reflections into the first floor.

These dwellings are the same yet different and organised around a multitude of outdoor spaces stepping up along a sloping site.

The front stair and veranda invite people into the building and connect and interact with the neighbourhood.

A private central courtyard brings light and ventilation deep into the plan and ensures each room has a beautiful aspect. The landscaped backyard and terrace provide ample space for entertainment and play, making it an ideal family home.
